Three schools will represent the country in Rugby 7s at this year’s Federation of East African Secondary School Sports Associations (FEASSSA) Games.
The schools are ET Mukingi, GS St. Famille and APICUR Musanze. The Games kick off on August 14 in Huye District, Southern Province and will attract schools from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, South Sudan and hosts Rwanda, who will be represented by 35 teams competing in nine sports disciplines.
The newly added 7s format competition will run alongside the 15s format competition which previously was the only format played.
ET Mukingi emerged as winners while GS St. Famille and APICUR Musanze, were first and second runners-up respectively in the recently concluded national Inter-schools League which was in the 7s format.
The Rwandan schools will have a better chance to compete in the 7s after having been out matched physically and tactically in 15s by Ugandan and Kenyan competition in previous editions.
Speaking to Times Sport, Joseph Yusuf Nsenzimana, the ET Mukingi coach is confident his team has a chance to win the competition, after a good performance in the Inter-schools League with players like Inter-schools’ league MVP Patrick Ikoraukwishaka.
GS St. Famille, who represented Rwanda at last year’s FEASSSA Games in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, will rely on a rich squad led by captain Carlos Simbi.
Debutants, APICUR Musanze will gain from competing against other East African Schools, according to their coach, Innocent Shimiyimana.
