Mechanisation: who will maintain farm implements

RE: "Govt in new drive to promote agriculture mechanization” (The New Times, August 5).

But none of those agri-equipment is manufactured or assembled here. We don’t know how to properly use them, and no mechanics are trained to maintain them.

Instead of focusing first on ownership and on the wonders of the potential impact of the machines, we ought to first create a pool of specialists that will operate and maintain the machinery.

The country is already littered with abandoned agriculture equipment and machinery that were hardly used and probably just miss a few bolts and grease. There is no need to keep piling up redundant machinery.
