Nestle, a Swiss multinational foods and beverages company, has moved to consolidate its presence on the local fortified foods market by introducing more products.

The firm last week unveiled Maggi cubes, which is used for food seasoning. The Nestle head of East Africa cluster, Ciru Miring’u, said fortified foods are key in fighting health deficiencies.

Food fortification is the process of adding essential micro-nutrients such as iron to foods to improve their nutritional content to alleviate malnutrition and micro-nutrient deficiency.

Miring’u explained that iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency on the continent, adding that anaemia - the state of having too little haemoglobin in the blood - is mostly caused by a lack of iron in diets.
