The Minister for Sports and Culture has signed performance contracts with local sports federations. The function was held behind closed doors at the ministry headquarters at Amahoro stadium, Remera.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Julienne Uwacu disclosed that performance contracts are very fundamental, not just in sports but in different sectors to ensure accountability.
"Today we have signed performance contracts with various federations aimed at attaining the set targets as we develop Rwandan sports,” said minister Uwacu.
According to the minister, only federations with legal status were eligible to sign the contracts while those that have not yet signed have until August 15 to have completed the process.
Among the key issues in the contracts include holding executive meetings every month and reviewing what has been done, and presenting to the Ministry what has to be done by the respective federations in order to develop sports.
Also, individual federations have been tasked to look for alternative sources of funding through partnerships with corporate sponsors in a bid to end overdependence on the ministry’s budget.
Out of over 30 sports federations and associations operating in the country, only 10 signed the performance contracts.
They include; Federation Rwandaise de Volleyball (FRVB), Federation Rwandaise de Basketball (FERWABA), Federation Rwandaise de Karate (FERWAKA), Rwanda Fencing Federation (RFF), and Rwanda Kung Fu Wushu Federation (RKWF).
Others are Rwanda Archery and Shooting Sports Federation (RASSF), Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA), Association des Educateurs Physiques et Sports(AEPS), Association Rwandaise pour la Promotion du Sports du Travail (ARPST) and Association Nationale pour la Promotion du Sport Feminin (ANPSF).
Among federations with legal status that did not sign their performance contracts include; Federation Rwadaise de Football Association (FERWAFA), Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) and National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Rwanda.
