Denis Gacinya has been elected as the Rayon Sports Football Club new president, replacing Theogene Ntampaka, who did not offer himself for re-election after two years at the helm of Rwanda’s arguably most supported club.
The elections were held during the club’s general assembly yesterday in Kigali.
The 47-year old Ntampaka steps down following calls for him to resign from sections of his club supporters following a disastrous campaign last season, which Rayon Sports finished in fifth place and also lost to Police FC in the Peace Cup final.
In his remarks after getting elected president, Gacinya said,” As new president, my major target is to make sure we are genuine challengers for the 2015/16 league title. I have been in Rayon Sports for a while now and I’m committed to its success.”
Little-known Gacinya, who had recently been elected to head of the advisory committee, won the Rayon Sports presidency unopposed after his would-be opponents, Shaffi Mudaheranwa and the club’s former secretary general, Olivier Gakwaya, both stepped down from the race.
Martin Rutagambwa was elected first vice president while Fred Muhirwa was elected the second vice president.
Gakwaya, who resigned as the club’s SG in June 2014 after he was sanctioned by FERWAFA for alleged misconduct during a league match against AS Kigali, regained his position whereas Patrick Rukundo was named new club’s treasurer.
Shaffi Mudaheranwa will head the Technical Committee, Denis Ndayisenga was elected head of Marketing Commission, while the Administration and Finance department will be led by Francois Harerimana with Isango Star’s Jean Lambert Gatare heading Media and Communication.
