Rwandan culture doesn’t favour circumcision

Dear editor,
I am not surprised that up to now very few Rwandans turn up for circumcision.

They simply do not want, though they have internalized its importance.

Social reasons behind male circumcision cannot be ignored.

There can’t be a bigger and important motivation for circumcision, as getting relatively safer, against the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

But the fact that many people are objecting, shows how culture is so strong. We thus have to go slowly in sensitizing people to adopt the practice.

Only perceptions of improved hygiene and lower risk of infections through male circumcision drove few Rwandans into the practice.

You know it is against their culture and we cannot force them.
