The Youth Literacy Organisation (YouLI) Wednesday inaugurated a Young Writers’ Club (YWC) at Kigali Public Library, Kacyiru, meant to harness talent.
The meeting, which featured different activities ranging from teaching games, group discussions to sharing experiences, brought together a number of young writers and artists.
Gilbert D. Rwabigwi, the Executive Director and founder of YouLI, said the young writers’ club is meant to encourage young Rwandans to write.
"It will bring together young people (between the ages of 15 and 30) who share the passion of writing, to connect, share and learn,” he said.
He noted that this is a platform for those with a passion for writing to get to greater heights.
Pastor Ornella Umubyeyi, an author of two books, said the club is of great importance to all young people.
"Rwandans need to develop and nurture the culture of reading and writing. Young people should develop these skills in order to become better and effective communicators,” she added.
The young people called for regular workshops, boot camps and writing competitions among others, to inspire and empower those who are passionate about writing.
Sharon Muvara Amanda, from the Diaspora who is in her summer vacation, said the club will inspire many people to be great writers, poets and even readers.
"I think no one should take this for granted and young people should exploit the opportunity.
‘‘We look forward to develop the writing field and possibly we can have a writing council,” she said.
YWC will be meeting at the Public Library once a month.
