If you are an APR FC fan, one thing you can rest be assured of is the fact the club will spend to get any player from any of their National Football League rivals, first in a bid to strengthen their squad but also to weaken the opposition.
Squad for squad strength and depth, APR have been miles ahead of their local rivals over the years and that gap will only get worse next season after the reigning league champions lured midfielder Djihad Bizimana and are reported to be eying central defender Faustin Usengimana from their sworn enemies, Rayon Sports.
Getting these two players [one has already signed a two year contract would be a big coup for the army side that go into next season seeking to extend their dominance by adding a record-extending 16th league title.
Bizimana, still only 20 years old is the best bet by to replace Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza in commanding the APR central midfield.
And with stories that Emery Baysenge, who is out of contract at APR is on his way to sign for an Austrian second division side, Lask Linz FC, there is no better replacement in central defence than fellow Rwanda international, 21-year-old Usengimana.
Ex-Etincelles starlet, Bizimana was out of contract and Rayon Sports took too long to put a convincing offer on the table for him, and in such a situation, when APR showed interest, whatever Rayon had to offer was always going to be a long shot.
For sporting and financial reasons, no player in Rwanda turns down the opportunity to play for APR—the reason the Black and White outfit always sign the best talent that Rwandan football has to offer.
As is like at every top club, regardless of the level, some of these young talents don’t fulfill their full potential when they make a step up, which is quite understandable because of the strength in depth in the squad that makes it real tough in the fight for places in the starting team.
However, with Bizimana and Usengimana, you are talking about two full Rwandan internationals with quite a considerable number of topflight football matches for Rayon Sports under their belts. As for Rayon Sports, it would be more trouble if they lose these two guys, which will be in addition to the several key first team players who have left the Nyanza-based outfit for greener pastures in the Kenyan Premier League.
Among them, former captain Fuadi Ndayisenga and midfielder Aphrodis ‘Kanombe’ Hategekimana, who joined Sofapaka last month—and before them, Rwanda international left back Abouba Sibomana and Burundian right back Karim Ndagijimana signed for reigning Kenyan league champions, Gor Mahia.
Add that to the fact that the team just lost a Peace Cup final against Police FC, few would blame the fans to express their frustration at the way ‘their club’ is being managed.
And further still, if the once mighty Rayon Sports can come back from this latest predicament and be ready for the start of the 2015/16 campaign, a season that will make or break the career of head coach Jean Baptiste Kayiranga, who you would suspect might not last its full length.
