Former UR lecturer Kayumba gets suspended sentence in rape case

The High Court has sentenced the former University of Rwanda (UR) lecturer, Christopher Kayumba to a two-year suspended sentence, after convicting him for being an accessory to the crime of rape.

The High Court has sentenced the former University of Rwanda (UR) lecturer, Christopher Kayumba to a two-year suspended sentence, after convicting him for having a role in the crime of rape.

According to the appelate court verdict delivered on November 2, he committed the crime against his former maid.

He was handed a two-year sentence suspended for one year. He was also fined Rwf 250,000.

The court's decision came after the prosecution appealed against an earlier ruling by Nyarugenge Intermediate Court back in February, which acquitted the journalism lecturer on charges related to sexual assault.

Meanwhile, the court also acqutted Kayumba of the crime of rape against his former student at University of Rwanda’s Department of Journalism.
