The Burundian forward penned a two-year contract on Monday after undergoing successful trials and agreeing personal terms—he joins compatriot Fuadi Ndayisenga and Rwanda international Aphrodis ‘Kanombe’ Hategekimana, who joined the ambitious Kenyan league title hopefuls last month from Rayon Sports.

Mbakiye moved to Kiyovu last season from Burundian giants Vital’O for Rwf1.8 millions, according to Kiyovu spokesman, Mudi Byumvuhore.

"Mbakiye still had one year left on his contract but when Sofapaka agreed to buy him out, and the player showed interest to leave for a new challenge, we could not stand in his way,” Byumvuhore said on Wednesday.

In his first and only season with Kiyovu, the powerful forward, Mbakiye found the back of the net 12 times from 26 games in the league to add to his tally of six goals in the Peace Cup.

Kiyovu finished ninth in the league, the lowest the club has finished and also reached the quarter-finals of the Peace Cup before losing to the eventual champions, Police FC.

The 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions, Sofapaka, who are handled by former Atraco FC Ugandan coach Sam Timbe, also signed Rwandan goalkeeper Evariste Mutuyimana from Kiyovu last year.

In January this year, Rwanda international left back Abouba Sibomana and his Burundian counterpart, Karim Ndagijimana left Rayon Sports to join reigning Kenyan league champions, Gor Mahia.
