Eric Ngendahimana’s lone strike in the 85th minute was enough to see Police FC win this year’s Peace Cup title after seeing off Rayon Sports 1-0 on Saturday night in front of a fully packed Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

The law enforcers withstood pressure from the Blues in the first half as strikers Peter Otema and Pierrot Kwizera as well as Emmanuel Imanishimwe had clear chances in front of goal but Police goalkeeper Emery Mvuyekure stood the taste of time.

Rayon Sports continued to test the Police defense until defender Mohamed Mpozembizi was handed an early yellow card forcing Police head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo to replace him with Gabriel Mugabo before the half hour mark.

In the second half, Police controlled the ball more using the wings with Captain Jacques Tuyisenge manning the right wing but Rayon Sports’ custodian Jean Luc Ndayishimiye was in control in collaboration with the central defense pairing of Faustin Usengimana and James Tubane.

Police had a chance to take the lead at the hour mark when Innocent Habyarimana sent a good pass into the penalty box but striker Idesbard Nshuti slid.

In a sense of urgency, both sides attempted shots from afar with Rayon Sports’ Djihad Bizimana leading his side’s attack but Police benefitted from Usengimana’s substitution as replacement Djabel Manishimwe could not do much to stop Ngendahimana’s header that granted Police their first title since the club was formed 10 years ago.

"I thank God so much for this victory. Rayon Sports played very well in the first half and they got several goal scoring opportunities but in the second half we tried to dominate play and try to create chances and that is how we managed to score,” said Police coach Andre Cassa Mbungo.

Meanwhile, APR finished third after defeating Isonga 5-0 in the third place playoff at the same venue. Striker Bernabe Mubumbyi scored a hattrick while his teammate Patrick Sibomana netted a brace to see of the youthful Isonga side that was relegated to the second division.

Police FC was given Rwf4m for winning the Peace Cup while Rayon Sports walked away with Rwf2m and APR bagged Rwf1m. Police will represent Rwanda in the 2016 CAF Confederations Cup.
