Imbuto Foundation alongside their partners including UNICEF, female Governors, Ministers, the Army and Police participated in a four-team football tournament yesterday at Amahoro Stadium.
The competition is a prelude to Imbuto Foundation’s 10 year celebrations of inspiring primary and secondary school girls to excel.
"As we celebrate 10 years of existence in empowering the girl child, we decided to organise the ‘Football for Fun’ tournament not just to have fun but to also create awareness about girls’ education,” explained Radegonde Ndejuru, the Director General of Imbuto Foundation.
UNICEF Representative to Rwanda Noala Skinner highlighted the importance of sports in girl education. She said, "If you are physically fit, you are mentally good. If you are part of a team, you have a chance to work together, to cooperate and to seek a common goal.
When you are working together as a team, it is something that teaches you skills about cooperation, compromise and about working for something together.
Sport has a very important role in terms of physical development, emotional development, team spirit and of course we want to see girls reaching out and playing sport. I think every girl should have the opportunity to be involved in sport, science, technology and in all the areas that Imbuto Foundation is involved in.”
The select team of governors, ministers and Police women won the tournament on penalties with the Minister of Sports and Culture Julienne Uwacu scoring the last penalty.
