Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) is proving to be a force to reckon on the local volleyball scene after landing more honors at the weekend.
The tax collecting body seized the moment last Sunday in Huye after trouncing National University of Rwanda (UNR) 3-1 in the ladies’ final of the 12th edition of the Rutsindura Memorial tournament.
It was RRA’s second title after the Carre d’As event where they still edged the varsity side in similar fashion (3-1) and one of the local volleyball governing officials has hastily tipped the club to stamp their authority in the near future.
"What the club has achieved on their debut season is amazing. They went so close in the Coca Cola championship and Coupe du Rwanda,” the official said.
In the men’s section, APR defended their title after a 3-1 set victory over UNR to successfully seal off a treble of trophies.
The Rutsindura Memorial coupled with the Coca Cola championship and Coupe du Rwanda has capped what has been described as a very successfully debut coaching season for Jean Luc Ndayikengurukiye, a former APR and National team captain.
At the end of the day, APR and RRA bagged Frw 250,000 courtesy of CNLG, the tournament sponsors.
The annual tournament is held in memory of Alphonse Rutsindura, a victim of the 1994 Tutsi Genocide.
Besides being a former teacher and lecturer at Petit Seminaire de Butare (PSB) and UNR, Rutsindura is also said to have been so instrumental in uplifting the sport back in the 80s and early 90s.
He was also the first vice president of FRVB and coached the ladies national volleyball team in the early 90s.
The two-day tournament attracted 30 clubs.
