Mozambique Football Federation (FMF) have sacked head coach João Chissano following their 1-0 defeat to Rwanda in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Sunday at the Estadio Nacional do Zimpeto.

Amavubi striker Ernest Sugira scored the only goal of the game in the third minute from a Jacques Tuyisenge pass on the right flank to leave Mozambican goalkeeper Ricardo Campos with absolutely no chance.

Os Mambas dominated possession in the first half as they huffed and puffed but an alert Rwandan defense and heroics of goalkeeper Jean Luc Ndayishimiye kept the home side at bay.

Amavubi took charge of the game in the second half creating more chances while defending as a unit and managed to walk away with three points.

It was their first away win in the AFCON qualifiers dating back to the 1-0 win over Benin in the 2012 AFCON qualifying Group H campaign in Cotonou on October 9, 2011.

Chissano was fired hours after the loss to the Amavubi with FMF citing a poor start to the continental qualifiers would affect their qualification campaign especially losing at home in the opener before they face Mauritius and group favourites Ghana and in the upcoming fixtures.

Chissano had earlier inspired Os Mambas to the 2015 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup final losing to Namibia 2-0 in the final at the Moruleng Stadium in South Africa last month.

In a statement released by FMF, his assistant Helder Muianga will take over the national side for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Seychelles on June 20.
