Zone V Women’s Championship: KPA upset REG, move top of Group B

REG 42-72 KPA

Rwanda’s REG women basketball club had little to nothing to do to avoid an upset the hands of Kenya’s KPA who handed them a 42-72 defeat on Tuesday night, October 31, at Lycée de Kigali gymnasium.

The loss moved REG down to second place in Group B, after winning two of their last three games. KPA are now leading the group table, having won all their last three games.

The Kenyans put up a determined display that saw them walk away with a deserved victory on the night, courtesy of team work and some individual brilliance from the likes of Victoria Reynolds who registered 20 points,5 rebounds, 6 blocks and 4 steals.

Three other KPA players in Madina Okot, Morgan Taylor Greene and Vilma Owino combined a total of 38 points.

On REG’s side, Chelsea Jennings led the way with a team-high 11 points while Chantal Ramu Kiyobe added 7 points.

The Rwandan representatives conclude their group stages on Wednesday, November 1, with game against Uganda’s only representatives in the competition JKL Lady.

Competition System

Clubs are pooled in two groups. Group A has four teams, while B has five teams. The teams in each group will play between themselves, and the top four will proceed to the quarterfinals.

Four winners of quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals where the winners will advance to the final to battle for the trophy, while the losers will play a third-place game.

The champions, the first and second runners-up will book tickets for the 2023 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women which will take place in Egypt from December 8-17.
