The University of Rwanda (UR) is today set to release the list of students that were admitted for the 2015 academic year, representing a slight increase in the number of females enrolled previously.

A total of 13,354 students were admitted out of 23,564 applications.

Out of the total number of admitted students, 34 per cent (4,536) are girls.

This reflects a slight increase (4 per cent) in the number of girls that were admitted last year, when 30.3 per cent (3,571) were admitted.

In an interview on Monday, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research, Prof. Nelson Ijumba, said the university expects more students this year than last year, where out of 11,788 students that were admitted, only almost a half registered and the rest did not mainly due to lack of tuition fees.

‘’We are expecting a higher number of students for this intake because there will be loans given to students according to their Ubudehe stratification,’’ he said.

"All students who are willing to study in the UR and meet all the requirements will pay Rwf600,000 as tuition fees per year, across all our six Colleges.’’ Prof. Ijumba said

He also said there are other students who have not been included on the admission list because there were problems encoutered during the application process.

They include 2,083 students who submitted incomplete information and have been given one week to complete their applications correctly.

Others are 2,519 students who made wrong choices when applying and their cases are being revised.

The online application began on March 6 and was closed on the May 4, 2015.

Admitted students will be distributed among the six Colleges, namely: College of Business and Economics with the highest number of students (37.8 per cent); College of Education, with 22.8 per cent; College of Arts and Social Sciences with 15 per cent; College of Science and Technology with 13.1 per cent; College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine with 6.3 per cent; and College of Medicine and Health Sciences with 5 per cent of the total admitted students.

All enrolled students will receive admission letters that they will use when requesting for an education loan and this will be followed by registration which will begin on the August 3 through 4 September 2015.

The students’ orientation week is expected to begin on September 1 and lectures on September 7.
