Following his success with the national football team over the weekend, striker Ernest Sugira has turned his focus to helping his club AS Kigali achieve Cup glory beginning with today’s clash against minnows Isonga at the Mumena Stadium in Nyamirambo.
Sugira, who netted eight times for the runners-up in the national football league season, is keen on finding the back of the net today and make a mark for Eric Nshimiyimana’s side that will be looking to win their second title in three years.
"I feel fit and of course my confidence is high right now after I scored my first Amavubi goal on Sunday. I am back to my club and want to do everything possible to make sure that we win the Peace Cup. Against Isonga, we face a good team but we shall be eyeing victory,” explained the high-spirited Sugira.
The 23-year-old scored Rwanda’s lone goal in a 1-0 win over Mozambique to register a perfect start to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Maputo on Sunday.
Isonga head coach Innocent Seninga told Times Sport that victory is their sole objective. "We are a small club but we have a big heart and we can upset AS Kigali. Nothing is impossible in football. We have trained hard and we believe we can pull off a surprise.”
Seninga will be relying on the brilliance of Danny Usengimana who has earned several call-ups to the senior national team on the provisional list and will be hoping goalkeeper Bonheur Hategekimana can hold off the Sugira threat as well as Isaie Songa, the league’s top scorer with 14 goals.
Hategekimana said, "There is no doubt that Sugira and Songa make a strong partnership but I will be on top of my game and I want to do my job well between the posts. However, we shall be working together as a team to achieve our target which is to win.”
Meanwhile, in the other games, SC Kiyovu host Sorwathe at the FERWAFA Ground while Vision Jeunesse travels to Rusizi to face Espoir. Musanze will play host to Etincelles while Gicumbi take on Mukura at the Muhanga Stadium.
The winner of this year’s Peace Cup will represent Rwanda at the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup.
