Shun strange callers, social media stalkers

Editor,

Refer to the letter, "Beware of fraudsters on social media” (The New Times, June 15).

Unsuspecting members of the public, me inclusive, have fallen victim to social media thugs. They plot their mission with detailed perfection, leaving no room for suspicion by first timers.

Ever since they conned me, I have learnt the hard way not to entertain strange telephone calls. Surprisingly, the fraudsters impersonate even big companies (such as MTN Rwanda) and high-profile personalities.

Complaints to telecoms and Police are met with laidback acknowledgement of the problem. Indeed both institutions often make a laughing stock of the conned public on the grounds of carelessness and wanting to get rich quick.

Telecom companies and Police have failed in tracking stolen phones making it easy for the fraudsters. Members of the public should immediately report loss of a SIM card before it is used in committing crime and the owner deemed an accomplice.
