One UN together with Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) last Friday celebrated the World Environment Day (WED) for the 43rd time at Mukura sector, Rutsiro district in the Western Province.
The WED which is celebrated on 5th June every year is one of the principal way through which the United Nations (UN) motivates worldwide awareness on environment and climate change to boost political attention for positive environment action. WED was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972.
This year’s celebration was under the theme”Seven Billion Dreams. "One Planet. Consume with Care”, a theme which is in line with the Rwanda commitment to harmonize economic growth with environmental sustainability and sustainable management of natural resources.
During this WED celebration, One UN together with REMA, Rutsiro District authorities, Mukura Sector local community and other participants jointly participated in community work to restore the degraded Mukura forest and mining sites in Mukura sector, Rutsiro district. During the community work, REMA launched the Landscape Approach to Forest Restoration and Conservation (LAFREC) project which is aimed at rehabilitation of Gishwati and Mukura Forest Reserves.
