APR Handball Club overcome Ngome handball club of Tanzania 26-22 to win this year’s Genocide Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Kimisagara youth center.
The Rwandan army side reached the final after ousting archrivals and last year’s winners, Police with a hard-fought 35-33 victory while visiting Ngome brushed aside local league side, Saint Aloys Rwamagana, 34-21.
Felix Mukunzi of APR was named the Most Valuable Player of the competition while Shaffy Niyonkuru of Saint Aloys Rwamagana was the tournament’s top scorer with 33 goals in four matches.
After the two-day tournament, APR head coach Anaclet Bagirishya praised his players, "Ngome are a strong side; however, we were well prepared for the competition and we deserved to win it.”
Former Police handball club coach, Bagirishya, also revealed that what amazed him most was not to win the tournament but eliminating his former side in the semi-finals.
In women’s competition, only three teams; APPEGA Gahengeri, Gorillas and UR- College of Education (UR- CoE) participated. They played on a round-robin basis where APPEGA beat UR-CoE 15-2 and Gorillas 19-17 to claim the title. The later won 17-9 over UR-CoE in another game.
