Twenty-five lucky school dropouts from Nyarugenge and Kicukiro districts in Kigali have got a lifeline, thanks to a Rwf13.8 million donation from MTN Rwanda to cater for their school fees. 

While receiving the money, the City of Kigali mayor, Fidele Ndayisaba, applauded MTN for its contribution to the development of education sector in the city and the country at large.

Speaking at the ceremony, Peris Kahuko, the MTN chief financial officer, said the telecom firm was committed to the development of education and pledged continued support for projects aimed at improving learning.

"We are committed to supporting the education of children in our communities to help keep children in school because a solid education esnures a better quality of life,” Kahuko said at the City of Kigali head offices in Nyarugenge district on Friday.

The donation comes days before MTN’s annual employee volunteer programme; "21 Days of Y’ello Care”, where the firm’s employees contribute to community development. The programme is aimed at garnering awareness about the need to invest in education for all. "Inclusive education is one of the key pillars of the Millennium Development Goals, and it is Rwanda’s national vision to have a knowledge-based society,” Kahuko said.

The telecom firm recently supported 25 school dropouts in Bugesera District.
