KARONGI — A senor six student at Eto’ Kibuye, in Karongi District, is currently detained at Bwishyura Police Station for allegedly holding forged national Identity Cards (IDs).

Daniel Sindayiheba, 21, a student of technical automobile, was arrested last Thursday after being found with four forged national IDs.

School authorities alerted the police that raided the students’ dormitory late at night-before later arresting another local resident, Eric Karemera, who is the alleged accomplice.

Police confirmed the arrests. Talking to The New Times at the police station, Sindayiheba confessed the crime but blamed it to Karemera, saying the latter sold them to him claiming he was an official in the Ministry of Local Government in charge of distributing the IDs.

"Karemera gave me these IDs after he identified himself to me as a local government official. I wanted them to help me in different endeavors,” he said.

Karemera, a resident from Bwishyura sector however, denies the charges. "I have no idea in connection to this case. He (Sindayiheba) is just putting a heavy stone on my innocent head,” he said.

According to Gaspard Ndagijimana, the school’s logistics officer, Sindayiheba had built a bad reputation at school because of his illegal practices.

"Yes he was found with four forged old national IDs and he is currently under police custody,” Ndagijimana said.

Ndagijimana added that all the IDs bore the names of Sindayiheba and he used them in doing many different illegal activities.

"All these IDs were written in Sindayiheba’s names. He used them in collecting money from different donors to get school fees,” he said and added that the boy was counted among the needy students.

Police sources say Karemera has previously been detained over the same case, a claim Karemera denies.

"Yes I was imprisoned last year but I was later released because I was found innocent. This allegation was Sindayiheba’s trick to implicate me,” he said.
