Rwanda U-16 will be looking for nothing less than a win when they face off against Ethiopia twice this weekend in the FIBA Zone V Championships at Amahoro indoor stadium.
Only two teams are competing in this year’s tournament which also serves as qualifier for the FIBA Afro-basket U-16 qualifiers which will be staged in Mali in July.
After Eritrea pulled out at the last minute, Ethiopia stepped in to compete with Rwanda. Initially, all Zone V member countries, but Eritrea, opted out of playing in the competition citing a lack of U-16 category teams.
Rwanda head coach Albert Buhake said that the team is ready to win the two games against Ethiopia and qualify for the FIBA Afro-basket.
"Our aim is to win these two games, we have prepared well, and the boys are raring to go and I am confident we will qualify,” Buhake told Saturday Sport yesterday.
The Rwandan girls’ team have already qualified for the FIBA Afro-basket U-16 girls’ tournament set for July 16-24 in Madagascar.
Rwanda qualified after, like in the boys’ category, all the other nine member countries said they would not take part in the tournament because they do not have U-16 teams.
