New Athletics Stars (NAS) runner Jean Baptiste Ruvubi clocked 2:19:03 to finish a historic second in the men’s 42km at the 11th edition of the Kigali International Peace Marathon yesterday.
The 28-year old ended a decade-long Rwandan jinx that had seen Kenyans dominate the podium in the full marathon.
"I am more than excited about my achievement today. It was not easy but I kept believing that I can make it and when I got to the 35km mark, fans encouraged me to continue and indeed I overtook three runners in front of me with 5km to go and I am glad I finished second,” explained the thrilled Ruvubi.
Kenya’s Ezekial Omullo Kemboi (2:18:15) finished 48 seconds ahead of the Gicumbi-based long distance runner with Benard Kipngetich (Kenya), who clocked 2:19:27, finishing third.
