The Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) has handed over 20 homes to disabled ex-combatants as part of their reintegration packages in their respective communities.

Each house is equipped with basics including kitchen utensils, furniture and other necessities, worth Rwf15 million.

Speaking on behalf of other ex-combatants in Nyabihu District on Wednesday, October 25, Theodomile Bagirubwiko, praised President Paul Kagame for the programme that supports the reintegration process.

"He [Kagame] has granted us our dignity. The houses have everything; beds and household equipment. It’s a miracle, we are grateful," Bagirubwiko said while speaking to the media.

According to the Mayor of Nyabihu District, Antoinette Mukandayisenga, the initiative is part of the effort geared at addressing human security for the beneficiaries, residents of Bihinga Model Village, Jenda Sector, a new community of ex-combatants.

"We are overjoyed with these accommodations provided to our residents. They were part of our human security issue,” she noted.

Addressing the community, Valerie Nyirahabineza, the Chairperson for Rwanda Demobilization and Integration Commission, urged the ex-combatants to cooperate with their neighbours and embrace the culture of unity.

"We recommend you to take these houses as gifts from the President [Paul Kagame], take care of them, and progress,” Nyirahabineza said.

According to RDRC, over 1,073 ex-combatants have been given good accommodation ever since the programme was initiated.
