Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) has embarked on a charity drive to help facilitate over 240 orphans at the Ntarama genocide memorial centre in Bugesera district on May 16.

RCA has partnered with several local companies to collect among many other things food items, clothes and cash to help the 60 homes of victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Over 5,000 people were murdered at the church which was turned into a memorial centre.

The local cricket governing body has contributed Rwf1m, local clubs have contributed Rwf300, 000, clothes, shoes, bags and caps while ICM Agribusiness has donated a total of 300kg of rice with Simba Supermarket also offering 125kg of rice.

According to the RCA general manager Joshua Mwanja, "This is one of our Kwibuka activities where we want to support the orphans who lost their loved ones during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. We have come together as the cricket fraternity to be a part of this charity drive.”

RCA has also organized a women’s cricket tournament dubbed the ‘Kwibuka Cricket for Peace women’s Twenty20 tournament’ set for June 12-14 at the Kicukiro Cricket Ground and has attracted neighbouring countries Uganda and Kenya.

All the three teams will face each other in a round-robin basis with the winner bagging four points and in case of a tie on the table standings, the winner will be decided by the net run rate.

A 17-member squad commenced training three weeks ago under the stewardship of head coach Eric Hirwa.
