President Paul Kagame this morning arrived in the Tanzanian commercial capital Dar es Salaam for an extraordinary meeting that is expected to discuss the crisis in Burundi, that has left over a dozen killed.

The meeting, which Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza is also expected to attend, was called following a visit by Foreign Affairs Ministers from the East African Community to Burundi last week in an effort to quell the crisis that has led to over 50,000 Burundian to flee the country.

"President Kagame has just arrived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the 13th Extra Ordinary Summit of Heads of State,” reads a tweet from the official handle of the Presidency, @UrugwiroVillage.

The meeting was called by Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete in his capacity as the chairperson of the EAC. Other heads of state from the five-nation bloc are also expected to attend.

Rwanda has previously expressed concerns over the growing violence, which has seen over 25,000 of the refugees cross into Rwanda.

At least 15 people have been killed.

The political skirmishes in the neighbouring country stem from the discontent by the people over the bid by President Nkurunziza to seek a third term, which they say is unconstitutional.

The elections are supposed to take place in June.
