Rwanda 1-1 Somalia (Agg 3-1)
The National U-23 side was yesterday held to a 1-1 draw by Somalia in a CAF U-23 championship qualifiers but the wasps are through to the next round having won the first leg 2-0.
Amavubi started well and scored a goal through Isaie Songa on the 4th minute, something that disorganised their opponents as the national side went on to dominate the first half.
With a 3-0 aggregate advantage, Johnny Mckinstry’s team lost focus in the second half and started giving away the ball carelessly and were duly punished on the 60th minute when Somalia winger Abbas Mohammed equalised.
Despite growing pressure in the second half, Amavubi held out for a draw that takes them to the next round where they will face the Uganda Cranes.
The Amavubi-Somalia tie was held in Djibouti at the the El-Hadj Hassan Gouled Stadium after Kenya declined to host the tie due to security concerns.
The winner between Uganda and Rwanda will take on Egypt in the last round of qualification for the quadrennial CAF U-23 Championship, scheduled for December 5-19 in Senegal that will attract eight teams.
The top three sides at this continental event will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
