Bonaventure Uwizeyimana will not be able to defend his title when the ‘Race to Remember’ paces off tomorrow after failing to heal in time for the 107m race from Kigali to Rwamagana.

The 22-year-old is still recovering from a head injury that he suffered a week ago when he fell down after knocking a pedestrian on the road from Muhanga to Musanze in training.

Times Sport could not reach the Team Rwanda rider by press time but a source close to him said he is gutted for failing to recover in time to compete in a race he was confident of winning again.

According to a statement from the Rwanda Cycling Federation, the one-day race will see cyclists compete from Kigali to Rwamagana. It is expected to attract over 50 cyclists.

Tour du Rwanda winner Valens Ndayisenga, who is on a 3 month training stint at the World Cycling Centre in Aigle-Switzerland, will miss the race. However other elite riders like Hadi Janvier, Nathan Byukusenge, Abraham Ruhumuriza, Joseph Biziyaremye, Gasore Hategeka, Jean Claude Uwizeye and Joseph Aleluya, Hakuzimana, Patrick Byukusenge will take part.

The Winner will receive RwF100, 000 while the winner of the U23 category, will get Rwf60, 000.

The competition will have cyclists from all cycling clubs like: Benediction Club, Les Amis Sportifs, Ciné Elmay, Fly Cycling Club, Huye Cycling Club for All and Kiramuruzi Cycling Club.

Race to Remember is part of FERWACY’s ‘Rwanda Cycling Cup’ which includes 10 national races and is part of the preparations for 2015 Tour du Rwanda scheduled for mid November.
