Bank of Kigali remembers genocide victims

Bank of Kigali’s Management and Staff on Saturday the 25th of April 2015 commemorated the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and remembered fifteen members of their staff that died during the genocide at Bank of Kigali Head Quarters.

Bank of Kigali’s Management and Staff on Saturday the 25th of April 2015 commemorated the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and remembered fifteen members of their staff that died during the genocide at Bank of Kigali Head Quarters.

A team, led by Ms Flora Nsinga, the Bank’s Chief Shared Services Officer also visited genocide survivors of Nyanza District in Busasamana and Mukingo sectors and donated fifteen Friesian cows and built 15 kraals for some of genocide survivors of these sectors.

The event was organized under this year’s Kwibuka 21 theme "Remember, Unite, Renew”, and honored the one million people who lost their lives but also celebrated the remarkable story of resilience and hope of the Rwandan people as they build a new, prosperous and cohesive society.

At a ceremony in Nyanza, survivors of the genocide recounted their memories of the killings and of their survival. However they were grateful to the Bank for the donation given to them. The Bank Management and Staff visited homes of survivors and listened to their testimonies. The Bank also visited the memorial site in Nyanza District and paid tribute to the lives that were lost there and laid wreaths in honor of them.

In her speech, Ms Nsinga noted that Rwandans should continue to have agaciro, and unity to ensure that genocide never happens again. She further emphasized the need to fight genocide ideology and genocide denial.

The Mayor of Nyanza District thanked the Bank for the generous donation and said this donation will go along away to ensure economic empowerment of genocide survivors of Busasamana and Mukingo sectors.

The CNLG Representative, Liberate Gahongayire remarked that the event will reaffirm Rwandans shared humanity and recommit to ensuring that genocide never happens again.

The visit was followed by a night vigil at the Bank of Kigali Headquarters where family members of the Banks staff who died in the genocide joined the Management and staff in prayers and lighting of candles in remembrance of those who perished in the genocideThe Representative of the families of the 15 members of staff who were killed in the genocide thanked the Bank for preserving the memories of their loved ones.

Ms Nsinga in her speech said that the Bank will continue to support survivors as it has been the Bank’s norm over the years in this period of remembrance.

We will continue to cherish their memories and their contribution to Bank of Kigali. We thank the Government of Rwanda for their commitment to unity and reconciliation of all Rwandans.” said Flora Nsinga
