Kenya Commercial Bank management and staff visited Gacurabwenge Genocide Memorial Centre in Kamonyi District to pay homage to Rwandans killed during 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The bank donated Rwf 1 million toward maintenance of the memorial site.

Speaking at the site, MP Specioza Ayinkamiye, a board member who led the delegation, emphasised the importance of remembering Genocide victims.

Ayinkamiye stressed that KCB should lead efforts aimed at putting meaning to the notion ‘Never again’ by continuously translating the phrase into action.

She noted that mobilising civil society and sensitising them about new developmental ideologies will help in the fight against genocide ideology.

"We were not here during the fateful events but we are very saddened by what we read about it. We are here to express our sympathy,” she added.

"KCB staff in Rwanda and elsewhere in the region will always remember the innocent lives of those who were brutally killed by the perpetrators cutting short their lives and careers.”

Pacifique Murenzi, an official of Ibuka in the area, thanked KCB for their support and stressed the need to fight genocide denial.

He commended the government and the people of Rwanda for their courage in dealing with the consequences of the Genocide.

Marthe Umugiraneza, executive secretary of Gacurabwenge sector, who represented the disrict mayor at the event, thanked the bank for the support.

Umugiraneza advised Rwandans to stand in solidarity with the families that lost their loved ones during the Genocide and support those who survived.

"I would like to commend the courage of Rwandans, the strong and selfless leadership who have chosen unity over divisionism, forgiveness over hatred and revenge,” she said.
