RWAMAGANA — Superintendent Jean Marie Butare, the Rwamagana District Police Commander (DPC), has said last Sunday’s motor accident in which two people were seriously injured on Kigali-Kibungo highway was due to over speeding.

Talking to The New Times on Monday, Butare cautioned drivers against over speeding, saying with normal speed one can easily avoid anything that could cause accidents.

The police chief explained that police is still investigating the cause of the accident but preliminary investigations point to over speeding.

"None of the drivers admit the mistake, they blame each other, and we are asking the eyewitnesses about the incidence,” he explained.

The accident took place at around 3 am on Sunday at Nyarusange in Muhazi sector, when a car, registration number RAA 037D, with five people on board, rammed into  a mini bus registration number RAA 146P, whose 18 occupants were coming from a wedding in Rwamagana heading to Kibungo.

The occupants of the car were coming from Jambo beach heading to Kigali.

Two people who were injured included one occupant of the mini bus who sustained head and leg injuries. He was rushed to Rwamagana Hospital before being transferred to Kigali Central Hospital (CHK) where he is currently admitted.
The other victim, one of the occupants of the car, is also still admitted at Rwamagana Hospital with chest pain.
The Sunday accident was the second in a week on the same road.

The first took place last Thursday September 23 when an ambulance rammed into a stationary vehicle, killing a nurse at Rwamagana Hospital and injured three others.
