Not even winning Cecafa will redeem our football

Editor,

I beg to disagree with Hamza Nkuutu in his article, "Rwanda needs to win Cecafa Cup consistently” (The New Times, April 19).

Mr Nkuutu is really an incurable optimist. What we need is to scrap our current football system and rebuild it anew from bottom up, from the grassroots level to the apex.

Winning Cecafa — a regional tournament of countries that rarely ever advance to the Africa Cup of Nations — isn’t going to do much to progress our national game.

Nothing less than a root-and-branch reconstitution of game, from youth development, to the way we organise and run the national league and other competitions will do the trick.

Think big and long term; stop engaging in a series of bound-to-fail quick fixes.
