The Ministry of Education through Rwanda Education Board (REB) embarked on a comprehensive review of the current pre-primary, primary and secondary school curriculum early last year, to emphasise skills development.
According to REB, all subjects from kindergarten to Primary Three will be taught in Kinyarwanda [mother tongue] as a core language of communication to enable children grasp concepts better.
Kinyarwanda as a subject will have an extra hour per week, while the number of hours will increase to eight from seven.
The new curriculum also seeks to make Mathematics more practical through demonstrations while entrepreneurship students will be trained on how they can be job creators than seekers.
In other changes, History has also been reviewed, and made more relevant to Rwandans with an element on the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The aim is to help children know the history of Genocide in a order to prevent a repeat of what happened in 1994, according to education officials.
Janvier Ismael Gasana, the Director General Rwanda Education Board in an interview said the launch will be followed by teacher training and mentoring.
According to officials, while the current curriculum runs for 36 weeks annually, the new curriculum will run for 39 weeks in order to meet the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) standards.
