As part of activities to mark the 21st anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has renovated a house of a Genocide survivor widow in Musanze District.

The survivor, Annonciata Mukamugema, 55, is a resident of Cyabararika Cell in Muhoza Sector.

This was after Police officers operating in the Northern Region identified her as one of the most vulnerable survivors.

The support, worth Rwf2 million, included renovating her residential house, constructing a kitchen and a toilet.

The money was contributed by officers operating in the region.

Construction works began on April 12 and were overseen by the Northern Regional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Dismas Rutaganira.

Rutaganira said the act was inspired by the need by the officers to work together in improving lives of all Rwandans.

"In such days of remembrance, Genocide survivors need the respect and assistance from everyone in society. We are all Rwandans aspiring to make our country better; we can only do that if we worked together and uplifted fellow Rwandans who need our help,” he said.

"It is against this background that officers decided to raise funds and buy construction material that we are using to renovate Mukamugema’s house, which is one way in which the Force is commemorating the Genocide.”

The Executive Secretary of Muhoza Sector, Jean Paul Sebashotsi, welcomed the initiative saying that: "helping Genocide survivors is a very important aspect of commemorating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Such acts represent the high level of unity and togetherness that Rwanda has attained.”
