Secondary school students from three East African Community states – Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda under their body Youth Voice Generation on Friday visited the banks of River Nyabarongo along the Kigali-Huye Highway to pay respect to the victims who were thrown into the river, and their bodies ended up in neighbouring countries.

The students held a walk to remember from Nyabugogo, near the taxi park to the Nyabarongo banks, where they laid wreaths on the river banks in memory of the victims. "Through our association we are striving to build togetherness so that as the generation of future leaders, we are able to confront head on the problems faced by our countries,” said Albert Nyabayama-Benedict from Tanzania. Ester Shaban Tuyizere, the association’s representative in Rwanda said that the youth must fight to ensure genocide never happens again in any of the regional countries, which, she said was among the reasons behind the creation of this association. Thousands of Genocide victims were thrown into Nyabarongo River in what extremists said was "putting them on a short-cut trip to Ethiopia” through the River Nile.
