Mukura football club is set to organise a Genocide memorial tournament in June, in honour of players, coaches, fans and administrators that were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, according to the club’s secretary general Emmanuel Ntakirutimana.

In an interview with Times Sport, Ntakirutimana said that the club administration hasn’t set the dates yet but the tournament will be held end of June and two teams from Burundi and Uganda will be invited to participate in the two-day event.

"The club hierarchy will meet soon to finalise plans for the tournament which might take place on June 27-28. Six teams that include four local clubs and two from Uganda and Burundi will take part,” Ntakirutimana said adding that the club is sourcing for sponsorship for the tournament.

Since 1995, Mukura has been organising memorial tournaments in honour of their players, officials and fans who died during the Genocide, but due to lack of funds, the tournament has not been held annually.

So far, over 70 victims have been identified; other teams that lost players include SC Kiyovu, Rayon Sports, Etincelles and Mukungwa.

The Genocide claimed a big number of players, coaches, administrators and fans across Rwandan sports, but it is believed that Mukura was hit hardest by the tragedy.
