It’s not Rema to provide alternative packaging

Editor,

Why did Rema (Rwanda Environment Management Authority) ban oxo-biodegradable plastics without even providing user-friendly and commercially affordable alternatives? How can we Rwandans expect to compete on the East African (and/or Comesa) market when our processed products are packed in opaque papers?

It is not the responsibility of Rema to provide packaging; its role is simply to ensure our environment is properly protected and managed. It is up to the business sector to develop alternative environmentally friendly packaging materials.

Our business class should think as entrepreneurs and see this situation as a business opportunity, rather than as merely an obstacle which, unfortunately, seems to be their usual default stance.
