The Speaker of Parliament has called on legislators to join the battle against Genocide ideology and revisionism.

Donatile Mukabalisa said this on Monday while addressing a plenary session at the closure of the first ordinary sessions of the August House.

As we begin a weeklong commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, let us join hands in mourning and honouring our beloved ones who perished, and also devise possible measures to ensure that ideology and revisionism is defeated once and for all,” she said.

"I encourage you to engage in activities aimed at sensitising the public these aspects that breed hate and examine the catastrophic history we experienced 21 years ago, so that we can learn the best from it as we forge ahead to a better life and, a peaceful a nation.”

The 21st commemoration focuses on fighting Genocide ideology and denial, as well as continued support to survivors to overcome consequences of the Genocide.

This year’s commemoration is conducted at the village level.

Mukabalisa called on legislators to join the newly-formed parliamentary association for the fight against genocide ideology and denial, saying through concerted efforts, lawmakers would easily all understand the need to fight genocide denial and revisionism.

Meanwhile, Parliament adopted 32 bills.

The other draft laws submitted for approval in the first half of the ordinary session await more scrutiny before they can be fully adopted by both chambers of parliament.

"Despite the closure of this ordinary session, some standing committee sessions will continue to finish some pending work,” the Speaker said.

Lawmakers are due to return from recess on June 6.
