Editor,

Reference is made to Lonzen Rugira’s article, "Wanted: The University of Rwanda’s worst enemy” (The New Times, April 6).

I am honoured to serve as the first Chancellor of the University Rwanda (UR). Though I have no operational or policy authority at UR, I accepted this role with the desire and expectation that I could make a difference in the quality at UR.

Therefore, stories like the one cited above are deeply troubling and deserve to be investigated and responded to.

If you have not already been contacted by a senior official at UR, let me know and I will ask that it be done so that we can learn if there are other considerations that should be reported, and/or to seek accountability for what happened.

I know that UR does not have enough resources to adequately pursue the desired outcomes, but we can certainly treat people with respect and respond to their communications.

Thank you.

Mike E. O’NealChancellor, University of Rwanda
