Gicumbi are set to be crowned today the new champions of last season’s handball league title. Playing in the national league for the very first time, the Byumba based outfit won the league with 39 points, two ahead of the dethroned champions Kigali Institute of Education (KIE).

On the way to the title on their debut campaign, the new champions scored a massive 400 goals in fourteen matches.
Despite sealing their title a couple of weeks ago, Gicumbi had to wait this long as the national handball federation was still investigating allegation filed by KIE concerning the outcome of the meeting between the two sides about a month ago in Byumba.

The home team won but the outgoing champions filed a complaint to the federation accusing the match referees of favouring the home team who won the game 23-22 in overtime.

The School of Finance and Banking (SFB) finished third with 31 points, followed by the National University of Rwanda (UNR) with 30, level with Ecole Secondaire Gafunzo but with a better goal difference.

Another debutants APR, finished the season in sixth spot on 21 points, one ahead of second from bottom Police while KIST finished bottom of the eight-time league with just 11 points from 14 matches.
