Two suspected drug dealers in Gatore Sector, Kirehe District, were arrested when sniffer dogs traced drugs in their homes during an anti-narcotics operation, as Police continues to step up efforts to curb the vice.

Steven Micomyiza, 20, and Robert Hakizimana, 34, were arrested yesterday when two sniffer dogs led officers to drugs hidden in their homes totaling to 86 sachets of cannabis.

They are currently held at Kirehe Police Station pending investigations.

"The operation aimed at curbing drug abuse in the country,” said Senior Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza, Director of anti-Narcotic Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department.

"The sniffer dogs proved to be effective as they led us to exactly where the drugs were. We commend residents for providing us with the necessary information during the operation,” Mwiseneza said.

"We will continue to work closely with residents and local authorities to ensure a anti-drugs safe society.”

Clemetine Uwabayinema, the head of social affairs in Gatore Sector, commended the police for maintaining security in the community, which has enabled residents conduct their business freely.

"This operation indicates Police’s commitment to sustaining peace in the country. Residents should, therefore, always work with Police by providing timely information on drug dealers and other criminals,” she said.

RNP set up the Canine Brigade Department in 2000 to tackle the spread and use of narcotics as well as fight terrorism through detection of explosives.

The Force also has over 80 officers trained in handling sniffer dogs.
