The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has warned the general public that whoever is suspected of committing any offence should abide by the law and avoid taking violent means to elude justice.

The appeal follows an incident in Gatsibo District, yesterday, where two people suspected of attempted murder and aggravated robbery were shot dead in Gitoke Sector while trying to escape as they led officers investigating their varied criminal activities to the scene of crime in Bukomane Cell.

The deceased were identified as Eric Ndagijimana, 27, and Jean Luc Dusenge, who had been in detention at Kabarole Police Station.

The duo had been apprehended with a motorcycle stolen from a commercial motorcyclist in Gicumbi District.

The motorcycle belonged to one Innocent Jyamubandi, whom the duo tried to strangle with a rope but managed to escape from the assailants.

"On Sunday morning, at about 6:50am, Ndagijimana and Dusenge led officers to their rental house in Bukomane Cell where they were to help detectives with ongoing investigations into their criminal activities.

"As they approached the scene, the suspects jumped off the Police patrol trucks, and attempted to flee in different directions, prompting the officers to shoot. Unfortunately, they were both fatally wounded and succumbed to their injuries,” said Police spokesperson, Celestin Twahirwa.

It is alleged that Ndagijimana lured the victim into their ambush near Gatsibo Guest House on March 11, after requesting to be transported.

Preliminary Police investigations indicate that upon reaching their planned point of action, Dusenge, who was lying in ambush, suddenly appeared from the bush and the two tried to strangle the motorcyclist with a rope.

However, when their would-be victim slipped from their grasp and fled, the suspects fled with the motorcycle.

Jyamubandi was discharged from Kiziguro Hospital on Saturday.

"We are very confident of our justice system and people should trust justice instead of taking dangerous shortcuts which in some cases come at a higher cost including loss of life. Police will always do whatever is in its means to avoid such incidents,” Jyamubandi said.
