Youngster Emile Bintunimana beat four riders to the finish line after clocking 3:31:33 to emerge winner of stage 2 at the ongoing Tour du Cameroun from Bafia to Bangangté, a total distance of 121km to register his first career stage win.
The 23-year old rider registered Team Rwanda’s first podium finish in the West African country, a race that has been good hunting ground for Team Rwanda in the past with veteran Abraham Ruhumuriza winning two stages in 2010.
Coach Felix Sempoma expressed content following yesterday’s positive results and believes that his riders will get better as the week-long 2.2 event rolls on.
Bintunimana was the best Rwandan rider after stage 1 on Saturday finishing 17th, a minute behind eventual winner Clovis Kamzong of Cameroon.
It was a consolation for the riders who had already lost Hakuzimana after his bike got a flat tire while teammate Patrick Byukusenge also suffered a puncture.
Meanwhile in Algeria, Team Rwanda will embark on their fourth tour at the Grand Tour d’Algerie today when they commence the Tour International de Setif with stage one in Setif.
