Rwandan students in Uganda yesterday participated in the monthly community work, Umuganda by cleaning Nsambya Hospital, one of the biggest private hospitals in Kampala run by the Catholic Church.

This is the second time the students are cleaning the hospital.

In November last year, students from International University of East Africa (IUEA) did general cleaning of the hospital and also contributed over Shs300,000 to help Sylvia Uwera, a Rwandan citizen who had been held by the hospital for failure to clear her medical bills.

Yesterday, students from Cavendish University and Ndejje were joined by Noel Mucyo, the First Counselor at the Rwanda High Commission in Kampala. Mucyo commended the students for upholding the culture of the monthly community work and called on them to concentrate on achieving academic excellence.

"Umuganda is one of the home grown solutions that have contributed greatly to the economic development of our country. I thank you for upholding these values and for promoting good relations between Rwanda and Uganda,” he said.

"We felt it pertinent to come here and give back because this facility contributes a lot to saving lives irrespective of tribe and culture,” said Edward Kyambadde, the Cavendish University Dean of Students.

Joyce Kampire, the Chairperson of Cavendish University Rwandan Students Association pledged that her association would continue holding the activity on a regular basis.
