Located in farthest end of Muhanga District in Mushishiro sector, about approximately 75 kilometres (47 mi) by road, southwest of Capital Kigali, Nyabarongo hydro power station now feeds 28 MW into the national energy grid.

The biggest hydroelectric power project in Rwandan history, was co-financed by Exim Bank of India and the Government of Rwanda to the tune of $125million. The Exim Bank loan amounted to about $80million (about Rwf 56 billion) and the rest was the government’s contribution.
