National women football league reigning champions, AS Kigali face-off with Rambura this afternoon at Kicukiro stadium but without their captain Shadia Uwamahirwe.
The 21-year-old striker sustained left-knee injury on national duty during last year’s first round of Afcon qualifiers against Kenya but kept playing for months at club and national team level which only made the injury worse.
Two weeks ago, she underwent surgery at King Faisal Hospital and is expected to be out of action for six months, according to her coach Grace Nyinawumuntu.
"Uwamahirwe is out for six months, it’s a huge blow but we will have to adapt to her absence wisely. She is a very important player in the team, on top of that she’s my captain, she will be missed” Nyinawumuntu told Saturday Sport.
Nyinawumuntu also disclosed that goalkeeper Judith Ingabire is also out for four months and also had a wrist surgery earlier this week.
AS Kigali lead the table log with 18 points, seven ahead of second-placed Kamonyi. Gicumbi-based Inyemera are third with 10 points.
