Gustave Nkurunziza, aka Kate G, is a presenter on the Gishushu-based Radio 10. He presents The Over Drive and 10 Tonight. He is a huge fan of nature and has a thing for black tea. He shared with Society Magazine’s Stephen Kalimba a few style tips.

What determines your style?

I am a simple person, I like t-shirts and jeans;I just prefer casual smart.I take a lot of time when choosing something to wear and can change like five times before making a decision. At a big event, I dress like an entertainment presenter; something different but not flashy.As showbiz workers, our look markets us,so we need to take it seriously.

Do you have a designer?

I have a guy called Hussein. I also have dealers who call me when they have something new. Ian Boutique in the New Market in town helps me too. In Rwanda,great designers are scarce.

What’s your fashion weakness?

I have only four t-shirts, I like them so much. But that’s it; I buy more pants and shoes than t-shirts.

What accessories do you wear?

I like watches with leather straps, bracelets, necklaces and rings. But they all need to be silver in colour. Gold is a no for me.

What if somebody bought it for you?

My girlfriend bought me gold jewellery once so I had to wear it. But in secondary, I returned a gift because I couldn’t wear gold. It is for ladies, I think.

What would you advise people to avoid wearing?

I see artistes wear heavy bling (jewellery) like chains, and not just one, but five of them. I’m not a fan of that. I am not a fan of clothes from boutiques either; if a shop is selling Air Max sneakers or Manchester United jerseys, you will spot many people with them. I can wear an Everton jersey, however,because it’s unique.

Any fashion advice?

There’s a Rwandan saying, "Uwambayenezaagararaneza” which means, if you dress well, you look good.

People judge a lot,you can be broke but if you dress well, you will give a good impression. The reverse is true, you can be brilliant but people will just look at your dressing and pass you by like you are nothing.

It’s expensive but people should invest in a well-stocked wardrobe.If you have few clothes, you’ll wash them and they will wear out.

Designers should step up their marketing skills so that people know they are there and can reach them.
