This is the second time the university is handling admissions for all colleges following the merger of public institutions of higher learning two years ago.

Addressing a news conference in Kigali yesterday, Prof. Nelson Ijumba, the deputy vice chancellor for academic affairs and research, advised applicants without Internet access to go to any of the university’s campuses across the country where they will be facilitated to apply online.

Prof James Mc Wha, vice chancellor of the National University (L) together with Nelson Ijumba the deputy vice chancellor for academic affairs and research addressing the press.

He added that this year the application period has been extended to two months – unlike last year’s one month – to give prospective students enough time to apply as well as look for funding.

"This will enable funding agencies such as the Fund for Support of Genocide Survivors (Farg) to know who is admitted and the they can offer them scholarships rather than the other way round where they were offering scholarships to people who had no admission, we want to make sure there is enough time for people to look for funding,” Prof. Ijumba said.

He added that they had discussions with Rwanda Education Board and the Ministry of Education and they expect a much smoother process this year.

Last year, despite admitting about 12,700 students, the university ended up receiving only 6,500 students as most applicants depended on government funding.

Prof. Ijumba said this year they were looking to admit about 12,500 students.

The University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James McWha, appealed to female applicants to apply.

"We would like to see young women have an opportunity to study at the university, we want to see at least half of our students being female,” Prof McWha said.

He said the varsity was in the process of beginning research on why few female students join publically funded universities as well as their academic and professional performance.

Unlike previous years, students will access study loans through the Development Bank of Rwanda.
