Traders and other Rwandans travelling to South Sudan will now find it easier to make calls and carry out transactions after MTN Rwanda cut charges for calls between the two countries. 

Calling South Sudan is now at Rwf60 per minute for both pre-paid and post-paid MTN customers, while roaming calls are now at Rwf68 per minute, according to a statement from the telecom firm.

The development is part of the Northern Corridor One Network Area that was launched last year. South Sudan is the fourth regional country to benefit from the initiative after Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

"Having South Sudan as part of the One Network Area framework is beneficial to everyone, especially Rwandan peacekeepers in South Sudan. Calling home or having their families call them has never been easier and more affordable. We hope that this service will add value to their mission,” said Yvonne Manzi Makolo, the MTN Rwanda chief marketing officer.

Regional experts say low roaming charges will reduce cost of doing businesses; foster stronger ties and enhance economic growth across the region.
